Origin in Red

Origin in Red is a contemporary quilt in which I explore themes of origin, center, and expansion. Starting from a single central point, a radial geometric structure unfolds, creating movement and a sense of spatial depth. For me, the color red is more than a design element — it represents energy, focus, and the beginning of a process.

The quilt stands in close dialogue with my work The Deep Turquoise. While The Deep Turquoise explores immersion, pull, and spatial depth, Origin in Red turns its attention to the starting point: to gathering, concentration, and the inner order from which movement emerges. Both works are connected by an exploration of perception, structure, and space, approached from different directions.

Origin in Red is my original design and is constructed entirely using Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP). I use this technique not only for its precision, but deliberately as a design tool. Clear lines, shifting perspectives, and repetition allow me to work with tension, rhythm, and structure while maintaining strong visual clarity.

I also teach Origin in Red as a course. In the class, I share my approach to planning and constructing complex FPP designs, with a strong focus on understanding the underlying structure and making confident decisions in both design and color. The course is aimed at quilters who want to deepen their technical skills while engaging in thoughtful, design-focused work.

Held Tilt is a quilt developed through a slow, deliberate process — from the first cuts to the completed quilt top. The work centres on precision, repetition, and the careful alignment of geometric elements.

The quilt is based on the Full Tilt pattern by Papper, Sax, Sten, which provides the structural foundation for this textile interpretation. Within this framework, choices of colour, placement, and rhythm shape the overall composition.

Held Tilt explores controlled movement: a sense of tilt that is present, yet contained. The quilt currently exists at the transition point between quilt top and quilting — a pause in the making process before the next layer is added.

Schweigen zerreißt – Silence Tears Apart

Silence Tears Apart is a quilt that deals with the invisible consequences of violence and destructive silence. Kept in dark, muted shades of gray, the quilt reflects heaviness, fear, and inner turmoil. Nervous quilt lines run across the surface, intersecting sharply and creating tension—symbols of inner fractures, pain, and emotional barriers.

At the center is a raised orange hand as an appliqué: an act of protection and defense, and at the same time a sign of hope and visibility. The color orange deliberately refers to the Orange the World campaign and stands for courage, solidarity, and the public naming of violence. A single tear symbolizes silent, unspoken pain, while spiral quilt patterns capture the feeling of fear, powerlessness, and inner turmoil.

Kupferwind – Copper wind

This wall quilt was created as part of the “Almost-Improv Inspiration Workshop” with Peter Byrne (Peter’s Quilts – Quilter/Designer/Teacher). The course taught a variety of modern quilting techniques, ranging from free, intuitive work to precise execution. These included creating your own patterns with freezer paper, free-motion cutting curves, glue basting for clean seams, incorporating narrow, curved lines, and big stitch hand quilting.

My quilt combines all these elements in a harmonious composition of movement, structure, and color. Curved lines and gentle curves meet clear, architectural forms—an exciting interplay between control and chance.

The color palette of cool turquoise and petrol tones, accentuated by warm copper lines, is reminiscent of wind, water, and light reflections on metallic surfaces. The linear quilting emphasizes the dynamism of the shapes and reinforces the impression of flow and movement.

This wall quilt combines graphic precision with a dynamic, machine-like aesthetic. Circles, gears, and overlapping lines form an abstract interplay of movement and structure—a textile interpretation of mechanics and time. The design is reminiscent of constructivist graphics and the formal clarity of the Bauhaus, translated into a modern quilt composition.

The motif was designed digitally and then realized using a combination of templates, foundation paper piecing (FPP), and appliqué. These techniques made it possible to precisely implement the exact radii, angles, and overlaps of the geometric shapes. The interplay of methods—FPP for the clean lines, templates for the circles, and appliqué for the overlapping elements—is what gives the work its structural complexity.

The design was then precisely transferred to fabric using the freezer paper method. This technique made it possible to cut and sew the clear lines and curved surfaces precisely – an ideal implementation for the digitally created template.

The color palette consists of turquoise, aquamarine, white and petrol blue fabrics, including both plain and marbled textures that add depth and vibrancy. The face appears calm, almost introspective, while the geometric breakdown of the surfaces evokes a technical, algorithmic aesthetic.

The quilting follows the shapes of the design with dense, rhythmically placed lines that create both volume and dynamism. The lines support the visual language and give the work an additional level of tactile structure.

This quilt is based on a design generated by artificial intelligence. The composition of geometric shapes and harmonious color fields combines traditional quilting techniques with modern digital creativity. The result is a contemporary artwork that highlights the intersection of technology and craftsmanship.

In the flow of time – Anniversary quilt for the 40th anniversary of the Patchwork Guild

This quilt was created to mark the 40th anniversary of the Patchwork Guild. It was designed exclusively in shades of red and using fabrics provided by the guild. The hourglass symbolizes the constant flow of time and stands for constancy, change and the traditional art of patchwork.

The deliberate choice of colors and materials underlines the connection between the past and future of the guild. This work honors four decades of collaborative creativity and traditional craftsmanship.

This quilt impresses with its clear geometric shapes and transparent effects that create a sense of depth. The color transitions and layering make the design look modern and light at the same time.

This quilt is a harmonious combination of modern simplicity and playful geometry.
